It's been quiet on the blog front for a few weeks now, but that doesn't mean we've been sitting around at the beach all summer. Industry reports continue to show plastic packaging is on the rise, with thermoformed parts contributing to overall growth. As we pointed out in previous blogs and articles, megatrends such as sustainability and middle-class growth in Asia, in particular, are opening up new opportunities for innovative package designs that marry convenience and functionality. CMT Calendar: May Events

Posted by CMTUpdate on 9:18 AM on April 27, 2017

If April is the cruellest month, then May might be the busiest (in 2017, at least). We'll be exhibiting at Chinaplas 2017, the world's 2nd largest plastics exhibition, held this year in Guangzhou. With HYTAC plug materials running in at least 6 different machines, we are looking forward to learning about the latest trends in Asian markets. We've taken some additional promotional steps this year with a new ad in a leading regional publication, Asian Plastics News. We will also be represented by Vulcan Plastics Technology, our new distributor in mainland China.

It's that time again - Kunststoff und Kautschukindustrie 2016! Perhaps you know this event by its simple acronym instead: "K". (It's much easier to remember in English...) CMT Field Notes: Thin Wall Packaging Asia

Posted by CMTUpdate on 5:16 PM on September 29, 2016

AMI, the organizers of the Thin Wall Packaging Conference, chose the city-state of Singapore as the forum for their first foray into South East Asia. As a key member of the Association of South East Asia Nations(ASEAN), Singapore boasts some impressive statistics: #1 investment destination in Asia, #2 most competitive city in the world, and #3 in GDP per capita (IMF data). According to Bloomberg, it’s also the ‘least miserable’ nation in the world, cold comfort for foreign visitors getting used to high prices for food and drink. The former British outpost is now a glittering global financial powerhouse and a hub of trading activity for the region, so it made sense to host a regional conference here. With just under 100 attendees from 25 countries, the maiden event attracted suppliers and processors primarily from Europe and Asia, with only two attendees from North America.

Data-Driven Thermoforming

Posted by CMTUpdate on 4:48 PM on July 25, 2016

Many industries have been "disrupted" by technology over the years. Many processes have been "optimized" through software. In both cases, buzzwords notwithstanding, the application of new information (or information presented in a novel way) to existing business models has resulted in improved efficiencies. The rolodex? Salesforce CRM. Palm Pilot? Smart phone. Illegible utility bills? Energy dashboards. MS DOS? Windows/Linux/OS, etc. You get the idea.

Back to Basics: Modifying the Plug Surface

Posted by CMTUpdate on 3:20 PM on April 15, 2016

It was waaaay back in May 2013 when we first published a blogpost about polishing plugs and why it is such an important concept. After some recent discussions with toolmakers and thermoformers about different plug materials and geometries, we figured this would be a good time to revisit the topic of polishing. Looking back in the archives, our original technical guide was titled "Polishing Guide." The updated version is more precise: "Tips for Modifying Plug Surface". The distinction is important as we shall see.

Since we introduced HYVAC LCM at the 2015 Thermoforming Conference, we have had a steady flow of interest in the new mold material. The good people over at Plastics Machinery Magazine recently published a concise and informative piece on the new material.  As stated in the article, we're still limiting the number of projects until we optimize the process for making molds.
